Ted Talk #6 Dave Eggers

I really like the idea of one on one attention. I think that children need more one on one attention, they can learn more in less time instead of a huge class of 30 kids with very little one on one time. I love how they were able to help all these kids, and that the kids were willing to go see these tutors and get the help they need. I think that this is such an amazing cause because some kids would never be able to receive this type of education in just a normal public school.

It is amazing how hard these kids would work to get their work published. They were so happy that their hard work was being shown to outside sources. I also think it is cool how the pirate shop became a success because of the children's books being sold their. I bet that it would be so amazing to walk in to this gag store became a place where the public could have a positive and educational outlet.

I think that there needs to be more of this kind of one on one attention outside of the school system. This is such great proof that kids can do so many great things if they are just given the recourse's that they need to succeed. Kids can be so brilliant, and people need to realize that, This organization is working on a great cause and they are helping kids to be successful in English for the rest of their life.

When he was giving his TED talk you could tell that he is very passionate about helping kids in English. He is obviously not a a professional public speaker. I could tell that he was very nervous because he would fidget throughout his whole TED talk. But once he got started talking he looked less nervous and got more into what he wanted the audience to receive through his talk.

J.J. Abrams' Mystery Box : Ted Talk #5

In this TED Talk given by J.J. Abrams, he talks about the unseen mystery's in the movies and TV shows that we all know, and also ones that he directed. He used his grandpa as a reference throughout most of his talk. He talked that sometimes the unseen mystery's are the greatest.

I love this concept, that sometimes you need to look deeper into things to find their true meanings. That nothing is what it seems to be at first. I really enjoyed him speaking because he used a lot of humor. I could tell that public speaking was not his thing, but that he loved talking about something that was important to him. In his presentation he used a lot of examples to back up the "mystery box" concept. He showed clips from Lost, Mission Impossible, and Jaws. He connected with the audience very well. I felt very engaged watching his TE talk, and he never lost my attention.

I like how he was able to make people think of an idea that not many people have ever thought of. Most people view things on the surface, and he encourages to notice the mystery box in everything. That sometimes the point of a whole movie, or show is not what you think.

Ted Talk #4 Clay Shirky

This was not one of my favorite Ted Talks. I think that he used a wide range of vocabulary to get his point across in a more complicated way. I had trouble understanding what the whole point of his talk was. I know that he talked about how rewards and punishments tend to make people mess us more often. I like that concept and I think that it can be true. But, this is a repeat of what we have been learning in our book "A Whole New Mind".

I did like how he used some humor in his talk, also how he used his hand in his presentation. I think that he is a good public speaker but I did not like this Ted Talk. I think that this Ted Talk was good to watch to see how some body language in public speaking.

Even though I did not enjoy his topic, this Ted talk was important for me to watch to know what not to do when trying to get the audiences attention. I think that during the majority of his talk I did not feel engaged or very interested in what he had to say. It might just be a single opinion, but I found this Ted talk less helpful than most.

Ted Talk #3.Daniel Pink

I think that Daniel Pink has a very good theory on why carrots and sticks do not work in the long run. I think that his theory on this is a good and positive one, but this idea is not in close view to our own society. I think that America very much believes that if you do your best you get rewarded and if you do not perform well enough you get punishes. Even though i do enjoy the concept of everybody working when they want and on whatever they want, I do not think that We will achieve it in our society anytime soon.

I think that a lot of the examples he gave were every interesting as to why the "carrots and sticks" theory does not work. The one that stuck out the most was the candle challenge. I think it is very interesting how when a reward was present, the group took longer to figure out the solution. It is true that when people do not have the solution right in front of them, they can panic. It is true that once the thumbtacks were out of the box they knew exactly what the solution was. But before hand their lack of creativity was holding them back from the solution.

I also enjoyed how he mentioned how the society we live in and they way we do things kills our creativity. I hope that someday people will realize the full potential that the human race is capable of when they are at their full creativity capacity. Over all he gave his presentation in a well mannered way. He was able to grab the audience attention and hold it through out his presentation. He uses humor and visual aids to assist in making his point. I enjoyed what he had to say, and hope that his view will effect other people.

5 Dangerouse Things for Kids by: Gever Tulley

This TED talk was very interesting and I think that some of these things are a little outrageous. The five (actually 6) things he think kids should do are, play with fire, own a pocket knife, throw a spear, deconstruct appliances, break the DMAC, and drive a car. I think that his logic behind a lot of these ideas were reasonable, but otherwise he seemed like he did not know what he was talking about. I do think that kids should own a pocket knife, for protection and things like that, but otherwise sometimes kids will hurt themselves or others with knifes. I think that it can be good to have kids know the advantages and dangers of fire. I know that sometimes the only way kids learn is through making their own mistakes. If a young child burns himself or herself, they will know that what they did is not a good thing to do. Also I understand why it is good for kids to throw things, but not necessarily a spear. I think that this man put a lot of trust in kids, and he does not even have children. I know that for someone who does not have kids, they will have different opinions than people who are parents. That was the ultimate flaw in his presentation, he did not allow a lot of perspective in his talk.

Sir Ken Robinson Video

This video really made me think about how often the school system limit our creativity. I thought that something very interesting he brought up was that a famous choreographer at one point was said that she had a learning disorder because she could not sit still. He said that now, in our times she would have been diagnosed with ADHD and never become an amazing dancer. I think that it is awful to think about how now a days people who show creativity are sometimes considered abnormal. And in reality they have amazing talents that make them who they are. Also in his talk he used humor a lot to engage the audience which i enjoyed. He made me laugh and he used him humor to make his points. I think that he addressed an issue that is often very overlooked. I never once have thought about how my school directly effects my creativity. But I no longer use drawing and painting in my everyday life, like I did in Kindergarten. The school district does try to grow us out of our creativity because they believe that the only way i can be successful is if I work behind a desk in a cubicle. Over all I agreed with most of what he had to say and I am happy he is passionate about this subject.
